WHY SOLAR POWER

Solar power contributes significantly to Italy’s electricity generation. In 2020, solar energy accounted for around 8.5% of Italy’s total electricity generation, helping to diversify its energy mix and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Italy had an installed solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity of approximately 20.6 gigawatts (GW), making it one of the leading countries in Europe for solar energy generation.

Accelerating Energy Transition

Rising energy prices

Energy prices in the EU have increased by 80% over the past decade. An estimated 50 million people in the EU being affected by energy poverty, which is defined as spending more than 10% of household income on energy bills.

Dependency on energy imports

Energy imports reaching €368 billion in 2020. The majority of these imports are from Russia, with natural gas accounting for around 40% of the EU's energy imports.

Decommissioning of nuclear and coal power plants

According to Eurostat, the EU's installed capacity of electricity-generating capacity decreased by 9.1 GW in 2020 due to the decommissioning of nuclear and coal power plants.

Inadequate energy infrastructure

The lack of adequate energy infrastructure is resulting in energy losses, which are estimated to be around 8% of total electricity consumption in the EU. Additionally, the cost of upgrading the EU's energy infrastructure is estimated to be around €200 billion per year.

Climate change and extreme weather events

The cost of weather-related disasters in the EU is estimated to be around €12 billion per year.
