CSM’s DRIVING FORCES

Over the last 20 years the key forces influencing the solar market have changed dramatically. While there is a clear drive towards improving access to  solar renewable energy, significant challenges remain. It is only through new solar technologies that the global energy crisis can be avoided.

Technological advancements and cost reductions

The cost of solar energy has fallen dramatically in recent years, making it increasingly competitive with conventional sources of electricity. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) from solar PV in the EU fell by 82% between 2010 and 2020.

Dependency

Coal and oil power plants are being phased-out due to negative environmental impact on the planet. Nuclear radio active hazards remain a threat to the EU and the wider global impact.

Supportive policy frameworks

The EU has implemented various policies to support the deployment of solar energy, including feed-in tariffs, renewable energy targets, and research and development funding. The European Environment Agency estimates that public support for renewable energy in the EU amounted to €66 billion in 2019.

Growing public awareness and demand

As awareness of the environmental and economic benefits of solar energy has grown, so too has public demand for clean energy. According to Eurostat, 68% of EU citizens consider climate change a very serious problem in 2020, up from 48% in 2013.
